Sierra Harvest
Sierra Harvest is connecting families to fresh, local, seasonal food and increasing sustainable, organic farming in Nevada County, California.
The non-profit organization's accomplishments over its first nine years include:
- training 30 young organic farmers
- educating nearly 7,000 children every month about the benefits of local and organic produce
- facilitating school salad bars and school food service agreements to bring more local, organic farm into the schools
- holding hundreds of community events to celebrate local, organic food and encourage families to grow their own organic vegetables at home
A donation of $10,000 by the Simply Organic Giving Fund supports the Sierra Harvest Farm Institute Program — a long-term program that works with farmers and ranchers to support and promote the growth of organic agriculture.
The Farm Institute Program addresses three levels of participants. Farm Crew provides beginning farmers with work on local, host-farms and weekly courses in production skills. Farm Biz offers experienced, early-career farmers and ranchers a four-month business course taught by small business professionals and educators. The Land Match program works to connect sustainable farmers and ranchers with locally available agricultural land, increasing the amount of land in sustainable and organic production.
