Green Plate Special

Founded in 2011, non-profit Green Plate Special’s goal is to get low-income youth in South Seattle to experience food in new ways through gardening, cooking and eating together. Kids who participate hone their organic gardening and cooking skills — often picking the things they cook.

The group engages middle school students — 4th-8th graders — through after-school programs, spring and summer camps, and evening cooking classes. Programs progress from basic food knowledge to advanced gardening and cooking skills. The kids come from local schools and organizations such as Mary’s Place and Friends of the Children that work with the homeless and poor.

Green Plate Special welcomes youth of every race, color, national origin, immigration status, religion, disability or gender identity — with a pay-what-you-can tuition-assistance plan that makes it accessible to all.

They offer a wide variety of activities, including weekly planting and weeding events in their garden, kitchen and garden instruction, work in the Green Plate Special farm stand, and two summer camp sessions.

The Simply Organic Giving Fund donated $10,000 to Green Plate Special in 2017 to help them continue their outstanding youth program.
