Garden Raised Bounty (GRuB)

Garden Raised Bounty (GRuB) is a nonprofit group that provides a wide variety of activities, trainings, tools and resources to help build a just and sustainable food system in Washington State. Their programs include home and community gardens, a youth program, a veteran program, a farm stand, a CSA and other initiatives that inspire positive change for both communities and individuals.

GRuB's mission is to grow healthy food, people, and communities. Each spring they partner with individuals, families, and organizations to build backyard vegetable gardens, offering gardens, vegetable seeds, plant starts, cover crop mix, and gardening workshops to support growing fresh, healthy and culturally desired foods. The raised-bed and double-dug gardens are free to low-income families and available for purchase by others on a sliding scale. GRuB volunteers and gardeners have built nearly 3,000 gardens throughout the South Puget Sound area in the last two decades.

The Victory Farm project brings veterans together to develop skills in sustainable, small-scale urban agriculture and food production. The vets work help build the GRuB backyard gardens, grow thousands of pounds of food for distribution to food insecure individuals and families through local food banks and help run a market stand and CSA in support of GRuB.

The GruB School program offers low-income high school students the chance to earn academic credit learning organic agriculture — and take home a weekly bag of seasonal produce and recipes. (As with the victory Farm project, the considerable amounts of food beyond the participants needs go to food banks and GRuB's CSA.) The program offers young people opportunities for education and leadership development. GRuB typically offers alumni of the youth programs opportunities for paid internships each summer.

Simply Organic provided a grant of $10,000 to support GRuB’s work to provide food for low-income families and bring together youth, veterans and communities around food and agriculture.
