Feed Iowa First

Feed Iowa First, driven by a mission to combat food insecurity by growing food and farmers, uses donated plots of land surrounding local churches and businesses to grow fresh, organic produce for local food pantries. Operating on the knowledge that a single acre of donated land can produce more than a ton of vegetables for those facing food insecurity, Feed Iowa First grows and donates 20,000 pounds of organically grown food annually.

Feed Iowa First also works to strengthen the local food system and restore pride in the state’s food heritage by training farmers and educating the community about the importance of a local, sustainable food system and how it can be achieved. Building a secure and independent food system requires land, money and people with a passion for growing healthy food. With rising costs for land, and with nearly 276,000 Iowans who are food insecure, organizations that donate their extra land to be turned into urban farms make a significant difference.

A $15,000 grant from Simply Organic in 2020 will help Feed Iowa First continue to expand food production and distribution.
