Feed Iowa First

Feed Iowa First, driven by a mission to combat food insecurity by growing food and farmers, is built on an awareness that most private land owned by local organizations goes unused and that a single acre of land can produce more than a ton of vegetables for those facing food insecurity. Using donated plots of land surrounding local churches and businesses, Feed Iowa First grows fresh, organic produce for local food pantries. Last year, Feed Iowa First produced and donated over 20,000 pounds of food. This year, the organization is working to expand to 15 partner sites for vegetable production.

Feed Iowa First also works to strengthen the local food system and restore pride in the state’s food heritage by training farmers and educating the community about the importance of a local, sustainable food system and how it can be achieved. Building a secure and independent food system requires land, money and people with a passion for growing healthy food. With the rising cost of land and nearly 276,000 Iowans who are food insecure, organizations that donate their extra land to be turned into urban farms make a significant difference.

A grant from the Simply Organic Giving Fund is helping support key organizational positions including a farm manager, an administrative officer and a plant sales manager. It will also support an upcoming transition that includes building staff, and boosting and diversifying revenue streams.
