Rosehip Aquavit

Aquavit, derived from the Latin “aqua vitae” or “water of life,” first gained popularity in 15th century Scandinavia, where it’s been a traditional accompaniment to a smorgasbord. The flavorful infusions gained popularity in the cool Nordic climate, which allows easy chilling of them in a snow bank or out in the woodshed. Swedes have popularly quipped that aquavit helps fish dishes like pickled herring and lutefisk swim down to the stomach. Skål!

Ingredients
1/2 cup seedless rosehips
1  whole star anise
1 teaspoon caraway seeds
2 strips (3”x1”) of fresh orange peel
750  mL vodka*
Directions
Combine all ingredients in a quart jar and seal.  Swirling periodically, let the aromatics infuse for 5 hours. Strain the mixture well. Pour back into the bottle and place in freezer. Drink cold, in small shots.

*Try to find a lighter-flavored vodka to highlight the aromatic ingredients.
