"Fondue is a communal dish typically served in an earthenware pot over a small burner. The Swiss have been eating fondue for centuries, originally in an effort to make food staples such as bread and cheese last through the winter months. When mixed with wine and heated, the hardened cheese softened into a thick sauce. Families and extended groups would gather around a large pot of cheese set over a fire and dip wood-hard bits of bread into the cheese, quickly making them edible, too."
